Step Into the Future with Daemen College
Slated to open in summer 2022, Daemen College’s Todd & Leslie Shatkin Institute for Mobility Innovation & Technology (IMIT) will provide WNY with a state-of-the-art facility devoted to diagnosis and treatment of neurodegenerative and orthopaedic conditions, robotic-assisted gait training, research, and education for students, professionals, patients, and their caregivers. IMIT is led by Michael Brogan, DPT, PhD, senior vice president for academic affairs and dean of the college, and Laura Edsberg, PhD, professor and director of the Natural and Health Sciences Research Center.
IMIT will transform rehabilitation services for people impacted by stroke, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, cerebral palsy, spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, and other neurological, pediatric, and orthopaedic conditions. Featuring the world’s leading robotic devices, IMIT will optimize health and mobility outcomes by providing people with advanced therapy and a continuum of care following acute rehabilitation. Research indicates the following improvements with robotic-assisted gait training and other advanced assistive technology:
- Functional mobility, walking capacity, and motor symptoms in people with Parkinson’s disease
- Walking velocity and walking distance for people with multiple sclerosis
- Balance and normal gait patterns following a stroke
- Cardiorespiratory, musculoskeletal, somatosensory, and other systems for patients with a spinal cord injury
- Gait speed and distance for children with cerebral palsy
- Hope for people impacted by traumatic injury or negative health diagnosis n Access to cutting edge equipment
