March 06, 2017

AMHERST, N.Y. – The heroic contributions and commitment of women in the military will be highlighted at a special event in commemoration of Women’s History Month being held March 21 at Daemen College.

“Unsung Heroes: The History of Women in the Military” will take place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the college’s Research and Information Commons Room 120. The event is free and open to the public.

“At a time when an increasing number of women are serving in the U.S. military, this event will help bring to the forefront the many sacrifices women have made for our country, their perseverance, and their many accomplishments,” said Dr. Maureen Millane, associate vice president for community engagement.

The event will kick off with a screening of “Unsung Heroes: The Story of America’s Female Patriots,” a documentary that tells the inspirational saga of courage and sacrifice of women who have served in the military. Produced by Academy Award winner Ron Howard, the documentary tells the story of female patriots through interviews, rare photographs, archival materials, and personal memorabilia.

Following the screening, a panel of women veterans who have served in combat will discuss their service. Panelists will include Laureen Barone, Elizabeth Canfield, Nerfis Elminowski, Lynn Magistrale, and Jennifer Wiese.

Event co-sponsors are Daemen’s Nancy Haberman Gacioch Center for Veterans, the Student Veterans Alliance, and Sigma Omega Chi.
