Faculty Distinctions
Dr. Deborah Merriam received a promotion to Professor, effective with the commencement of the 2024-2025 academic year.
Dr. Cheryl Nosek, Professor and former Chair of the Department of Nursing was conferred as Professor Emeritus in June 2024.
Faculty Updates
The Department of Nursing welcomes Dr. Elizabeth Leiser as the Advanced Practice Program Director. Dr. Leiser served as the Interim Director during the spring semester. She also has been an adjunct faculty member teaching in the undergraduate and graduate programs.

Dr. Martha Kershaw was honored in celebration of Women's History Month, the Lockport City School District (LCSD) honored outstanding women by hosting the inaugural "Women Who ROAR" awards. Standing for "Recognizing outstanding achievements and resilience," the ceremony highlighted remarkable women from the Lockport community as well as young ladies from Lockport schools. The district was proud to recognize women from the WNY community who represent expertise in STEM, healthcare, community engagement, the arts, and social-emotional wellbeing.
Dr. Josette Brodhead President of NYLN organized the AI and Other Technologies in Nursing Education and Practice conference which was held at Daemen on 11/4 Nursing faculty - Dr. Deb Merriam, Dr. Veronica Valazza, Professor Janeen Bass, Dr. Janice Hobba-Glose, and alumni Mary Reinhart presented Game On! Leveraging Technology and Game-Based Learning to Engage Nurses.
Alexandra Sanders, a nursing adjunct faculty member is a contributing author to the paper, Psychological Distress, Emergency Room Utilization, and MortalityRisk Among US Adults With History of Prostate Cancer in JCO Oncology.
Dr. Josette Brodhead and Dr. Veronica Valazza represented ANA-NY at the Nursing Lobby Day May 7th. They were able to meet with several of our state representatives, including Senator Gallivan, to talk about nursing and priorities. The representatives they met with were all members of the healthcare committee. A bill was just introduced Monday evening in the Senate that would require hospital boards to have a RN as a voting member.
Other bills that the ANA are supported:
- Scope of practice for CRNA's. NY is the only state that does not have this
- Remove the sunset provision for NP's to practice at the full extent
- Provide up to a $3000 credit for preceptors (this is just not nursing)
- Support for the compact licensure
- Taking the loopholes out of e-cigarettes legislation
- Tighten up the laws regarding healthy and safe work environments, including workplace bullying
Dr. Josette Brodhead successfully passed the IAAP – Certified Professional in Accessibility Core Competency (CPACC) examination.OLC Instructional Designer Certificate Program.
Dr. Veronica Valazza has earned 10 CEUs for completing AI Academy, a four-week online program dedicated to advancing education through the mastery of practical AI skills for teaching, innovative assessment design with AI, and effective communication of ethical AI use to students.

Clinical Coordinator
The Department of Nursing has added a Clinical Coordinator. Hannah Tedesco has joined the Department in that role. Hannah is a graduate of the Master of Science in Social Work program at Daemen.
