Obtaining a Social Security Card

Any student who will work in the U.S. must apply for a Social Security Number. The employer must use the SSN to report wages and taxes to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and Social Security Administration (SSA). F-1 students are eligible to apply for an SSN after they have received an offer of employment that meets SSA standards. Please see the tabs below to learn more about obtaining a social security card.

NOTE: In order to receive a social security card you must be hired on campus first.

Below is a list of everything you need to bring with you to the social security office and what to expect.

Important Information For AFTER You Receive Your Card

As stated above, it can take 4+ weeks for your card to come in; be patient!

This is an extremely important piece of paper. You should not give your card number out to anyone but Daemen's Employee Engagement Office. Please read more about social security theft here.

Most U.S. citizens memorize their card number so they do not have to bring it out. It should be kept in a safe place; NOT your wallet.

If you lose your card, you can order a replacement, but you can only do this 10 times so it is important to be careful with.
