Frequently Requested Information about Technology on Campus
We often hear from parents and students that they are looking for information regarding purchasing computers for college. While Daemen does not require any specific computers, our Information Technology Department has worked with Dell to help students find a computer that will fit their educational needs while considering their budget in a variety of price ranges specifically for Daemen students. For information on Daemen’s partnership with Dell Computers please go to
www.dell.com/Daemen.
Any recently purchased computer will be adequate for the academic needs of Daemen students. For older computers, a minimum configuration for academic purposes only would be Windows 8, with a minimum of 4 GB of memory, or a Macintosh computer running OS 10.12 or higher. Most students use computers with the Windows 10 operating system.
Students majoring in Business and Accounting may prefer to use a computer running the Windows operating system. Many of the courses in these degree programs use software that is not compatible with Mac computers.
Students majoring in Graphic Design may prefer to use a computer with the Mac operating system. Students majoring in Animation should contact the Animation department (716) 839-8241) to verify their computers can run specialized software used in the program. Laptop computers are convenient and the most popular choice, but not required.
Students enrolled in fully online courses or degree programs need to have access to a computer meeting minimum requirements.
All Daemen students are eligible to download Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) at no cost. Students also have access to a list of recommended free anti-virus software, as part of our computer security recommendations. Students may contact their individual departments for other specific software recommendations.
Printing is available for students in the Research and Information Commons or the Business Building computer areas. Students must log in with their Daemen username and password before they are allowed to print. Daemen provides 300 FREE printed pages for each student. Each student’s allotment is recharged to 300 pages at the beginning of each Fall and Spring semester. No pages are carried over from previous semesters. Duplex or 2-sided printing is available at NO ADDITIONAL CHARGE. What if students need to print more? If they have used their allotment of FREE pages, they will see a balance of 0. They will still be allowed to print, but they will be shown a negative balance and they will be charged 5 cents per page that will be added to their bill in the Bursar’s office. They can manage their printing through the PaperCut management site.
Wireless internet access is available across campus (dc-secure and dc-guest), including all residence halls (dc-wildcat). Ethernet jacks for wired internet access are also available in all college residence halls. In order to protect against viruses, resident students will be required to register their computers on the network. Registration requires a legal copy of the Windows operating system or MacOS. Students will need to perform all current Windows or MacOS updates and it is strongly recommended to install free anti-virus software.
Students may not bring wireless routers, servers or set up gaming networks in the residence halls. Illegal file sharing is also prohibited.
