Applying for Certification

Throughout your program at Daemen University, the Education Department will guide you in understanding and fulfilling the New York State Education Department’s (NYSED) certification requirements. Please note that certain requirements—such as workshops, fingerprinting, and exams—carry out-of-pocket costs paid directly to state-approved providers. Visit the  NYSTCE website for more information on the required New York State teacher certification exams. Upon graduation, teacher candidates are eligible to apply for certification in the area(s) aligned with their completed program through NYSED’s TEACH System, administered  by the Office of Teaching Initiatives (OTI).

Additional Certification Areas

If you wish to pursue additional certification areas beyond those covered in your program, the Education Department can offer professional guidance. However, any requirements for additional certifications are determined by the New York State Education Department (NYSED) and may change over time. Daemen University does not guarantee certification in areas outside your designated program. You can review certification requirements on the NYSED OTI website.

Teacher Certification Disclosure Statement

Daemen University’s teacher preparation programs are designed to meet certification requirements in New York State. Prospective teachers who plan to seek certification in other states or Canadian provinces should be aware that professional licensure/certification requirements vary by jurisdiction. Other states or provinces may require additional coursework, additional fieldwork, background checks, specific licensure exams, extra fees, or other criteria. Each jurisdiction’s professional licensing board ultimately decides eligibility for licensure/certification based on current rules and regulations at the time of application.
